Uma leitura decolonial dos sentidos da violência em Robinson Crusoé

This article aims at re-reading the novel Robinson Crusoé (1719), by the Englishman Daniel Defoe, highlighting its coloniality logic and its vision of the world from a “Northern Eye”. This historical review approach questions the dichotomy imposed on colonized peoples, which still divides the world into humans and non-humans through a social-identity reading well presented by Rildo Cosson (2020). We are interested in identifying how this dichotomy is used by Defoe to inaugurate, in the English-language novel genre, the representation of the colonized as a non-human. Methodologically, we revisit the postcolonial debates proposed by G. Kilomba (2019) and S. Hall (2016), and the decolonial approaches articulated by A. Quijano (2005) and W. Mignolo (2007) to scrutinize how the protagonist Crusoé behaves in relation to his Other from an individualistic, liberal, modern place, governed by the objective of profit and enrichment. From this re-reading, we intend to highlight and expand the ideological meanings of the colonizing project registered in Defoe's text.
