The purpose of this article is to analyze the hygienist character present in speeches by dentists published in periodicals and newspapers in the second decade of the twentieth century, in Belém do Pará. At that moment, the hygienist movement, which emerged in Europe, was spread by professional dentists in the capital of Pará. Three articles published in the local press during the investigated period were found, more precisely, in the Estado do Pará newspaper and in the educational journal O Ensino. For the analysis of these articles, we consider Foucault's theoretical and methodological reflections on discourse analysis to be important. It was found that the speeches of dentists, with regard to hygienism, were related to the proposal of intervention in educational practice in public schools in Belém, in that period. It was also found that there is a charitable and charitable character both in the proposals and in the practices detected, as well as there are indications that the oral care suggested by dentists for schools began with the Dental Assistance Clinic in 1915, which was linked to the Escola Livre de Odontologia do Pará, created in 1914.
