Resumo: Gilberto Freyre (1900-1989) é um intelectual conhecido mundialmente principalmente devido a obra que marcou sua carreira ainda em seus primórdios, Casa-Grande & Senzala (1933). Esta dissertação, porém, foi fruto de uma pesquisa que buscou analisar um outro episódio de sua longa trajetória: A viagem de Gilberto Freyre para Portugal e suas colônias, nos anos de 1951 e 1952. De forma não coincidente, naquele momento Portugal vivenciava o Estado Novo de Oliveira Salazar, bem como as consequências do fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial. O pernambucano, por outro lado, desenvolvia aquela que seria a sua mais controversa teoria, o Lusotropicalismo. A viagem empreendida por Freyre foi crucial para o desenvolvimento e difusão de sua teoria, bem como de extrema importância para a construção de um discurso voltado para as relações externas portuguesas, em defesa da permanência das colônias. Duas obras são cruciais para analisarmos essa viagem e suas implicações, são elas: Aventura e Rotina: sugestões de uma viagem à procura das constantes portuguesas de caráter e ação (1953) uma espécie de diário de viagens de Freyre e Um brasileiro em terras portuguesas. Introdução a uma possível luso-tropicologia acompanhada de conferências e discursos proferidos em Portugal e em terras lusitanas e ex-lusitanas da Ásia, da África e do Atlântico (1953), coletânea de conferências e discursos proferidos durante a viagem, ambas se constituem como fonte documental desta pesquisa, provendo considerável material para a análise da viagem de Freyre.

This dissertation, however, was the result of a research that sought to analyze another episode of its long trajectory: Gilberto Freyre s trip to Portugal and its colonies in 1951 and 1952. In a non-coincident way, at that moment Portugal went through the government of Oliveira Salazar, as well as the consequences of the end of World War II. Gilberto Freyre, on the other hand, developed what would be his most controversial theory, Lusotropicalismo. The trip made by Freyre was crucial for the development and diffusion of his theory, as well as of extreme importance for the construction of a discourse directed to the Portuguese external relations, in defense of the permanence of the colonies. Two books are crucial to analyze this trip and its implications: Adventure and Routine - suggestions of a trip in search of the Portuguese constants of character and action (1953) a sort of Freyre travel diary and A Brazilian in Portuguese lands.
