Intensified continuity in film sound: six trends and a case study

Resumo: This essay aims to discuss the relevance of the concept of intensified continuity to the task of analyzing film and other audiovisual products’ soundtracks. In addition to detailing the origins and development of the concept, created by David Bordwell, the essay examines two previous tentatives of conceptual correspondence between the term and certain sound editing and mixing strategies used by professionals in sound post-production. The essay also tests the theoretical premises through a case study, analyzing the soundtrack of a scene from the feature film Drive (2011), directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. The analysis was made by opening and scrutinizing the sound track on Pro Tools software, the main sound editing and mixing station work on film industry for now.

Además de detallar el origen del concepto, desarrollado por David Bordwell, el artículo examina dos intentos previos de correspondencia conceptual entre el término y ciertas estrategias de edición y mezcla de sonido utilizadas por profesionales de post-producción sonora; y prueba las premisas desarrolladas a través de un estudio de caso: el análisis del sonido de una secuencia de la película Drive (2011), de Nicolas Winding Refn. El análisis fue realizado a partir de la banda sonora de la película, abierta y disecada en el software de edición de sonido Pro Tools, estándar de la industria audiovisual contemporánea.Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir a pertinência do conceito de continuidade intensificada para a análise da banda sonora de filmes e outros produtos audiovisuais. Além de detalhar a origem do conceito, desenvolvido por David Bordwell, o artigo examina duas tentativas prévias de correspondência conceitual entre o termo e certas estratégias estilísticas edição de som e mixagem, utilizadas de forma recorrente por profissionais de pós-produção sonora. Na seção seguinte, o artigo testa as premissas desenvolvidas através de um estudo de caso: a análise da banda sonora de uma sequência do filme Drive (2011), de Nicolas Winding Refn.
