After the frenzy: A historiography of digital longform journalism

Resumo: Ten years after the frenzy generated by Snow Fall and NSA files, it is time to question the resilience of digital longform. This paper presents a historiographical proposal of this genre on the internet. The genre development is organized in three phases, marked by the introduction of technological devices in the editorial routine: Transposition (1996-2001) analyzes the early years of digital longform journalism; Renovation (2002-2011) examines initial ruptures and how computer languages were absorbed; and Stabilization (2012-2021) includes the most current picture of genre. To this end, the paper looked at innovative projects and similar research over the past two decades. The goal is to map the structuring components which forged the bases to longform journalism.

Este artículo presenta una propuesta historiográfica del género en la red. El desarrollo se organiza en tres fases, marcadas por la introducción de dispositivos tecnológicos en la rutina de producción: Transposición (1996-2001) analiza los primeros años del género en la red; Renovación (2002-2011) examina rupturas iniciales y cómo se absorbieron los lenguajes informáticos; Estabilización (2012-2021) incluye la imagen más actual de las prácticas del género. Para esto, recurrimos a la observación de trabajos innovadores e investigaciones similares en las últimas dos décadas. El objetivo es mapear los componentes estructurantes para que el reportaje pudiera existir en internet.Dez anos depois do frenesi gerado por obras como Snow Fall e NSA files, chega o momento de problematizar a resiliência da reportagem na internet. Este artigo apresenta uma proposta historiográfica do gênero na web. O seu desenvolvimento é organizado em três períodos, marcados pela introdução de aparatos tecnológicos nas rotinas produtivas da redação: Transposição (1996-2001) examina os primeiros anos da reportagem na rede; Renovação (2002-2011) explora rupturas iniciais e como linguagens informáticas foram absorvidas; e Estabilização (2012-2021) analisa o quadro mais atual das práticas do gênero. Para tanto, recorreu-se à observação direta de obras inovadoras e a pesquisas similares ao longo das últimas duas décadas.
