Science and technology in the imaginary of The Big Bang Theory: from archetypical images to updating of myths and stereotypes in the "Information Age"

Resumo: The Big Bang Theory, a successful sitcom in several countries, creates, reproduces an shares an imaginary that is a mirror of some science and technology aspects that became almost omnipresent in contemporary society. This paper maps the main symbolical elements of the scientific-technological imaginary in the sitcom and analyses their meanings. The goal is better understand the identification process between the serial and its audience and identify some elements that contribute for its success. The research is based on the anthropological concept about the imaginary and in the “mythodology” developed by Gilbert Durand. The results show what archetypes, myths and stereotypes related to science and technology flow in the imaginary of a mainstream audiovisual product and how they are updated in a comedy.

Este artículo mapea los principales elementos simbólicos del imaginario científico-tecnológico de la serie y analiza los sentidos que ellos comunican, con el objetivo de comprender mejor los mecanismos que establecen la identificación de la serie con la audiencia, y consecuentemente contribuyen al éxito de ella. La investigación se fundamenta en la concepción antropológica de imaginario y en los supuestos del estudio de los arquetipos y mitos (mitología) desarrollados por Gilbert Durand. Los resultados muestran la circulación de arquetipos, mitos y estereotipos ligados a la ciencia y la tecnología en el imaginario de un producto audiovisual mediático y cómo éste los actualiza a través del cómico.The Big Bang Theory, um dos sitcoms de sucesso na TV em vários países, cria, reproduz e compartilha um imaginário que reflete aspectos da ciência e da tecnologia que se tornaram quase que onipresentes na sociedade contemporânea. Este artigo mapeia os principais elementos simbólicos do imaginário científico-tecnológico da série e analisa os sentidos que eles comunicam, com o objetivo de melhor compreender os mecanismos que estabelecem a identificação da série com a audiência, e consequentemente contribuem para o sucesso dela. A investigação fundamenta-se na concepção antropológica de imaginário e nos pressupostos do estudo dos arquétipos e mitos (mitodologia) desenvolvidos por Gilbert Durand.
