Feminism and intolerance: an analysis of Roraima state laws

Resumo: This article aims at discussing about Gender Studies in the school context, backgrounded by the state laws nº 1245/2018 and nº 1323/2019, the former prohibits any mention of gender studies in state and private schools in the state of Roraima, and the latter states stipulates the appreciation of women and the fight against sexism in the public schools of Roraima, tacitly repealing the previous law. It is understood here that schools should be a space that encourages critical thinking and fosters dialogue and reflection without prejudice. The clash between both laws can be considered an unmistakable example of the intensification of hate discourse that have escalated with political polarization in Brazil in recent years. Inspired by Latin American decolonial thinking and Gender Studies, this article reflects upon the impact of these laws and their significance for Roraimense society today.

A primeira, dispõe sobre a proibição de qualquer menção aos estudos de gênero nas escolas estaduais e privadas no estado de Roraima e, a segunda, dispõe sobre a valorização das mulheres e o combate ao machismo nas escolas públicas de Roraima, revogando tacitamente a lei anterior. Entende-se aqui que a escola deve ser um espaço que incentive o pensamento crítico e que fomente o diálogo e a reflexão sem preconceitos. O embate entre ambas as leis pode ser considerado um exemplo inequívoco do recrudescimento desses discursos de ódio que se exacerbaram com a polarização política ampliada no Brasil nos últimos anos.
