High tide and low tide of the representation of the port-oceanic imaginary in the Valparaíso narrative

Resumo: The sea is an element that decisively composes the geography of Valparaíso, determining ways of inhabiting the territory, the character of its inhabitants, modes of speech, production systems and social networks. It is a presence of an elementary type that integrates and generates what could be considered as the central imaginary of the culture of a port city. This article aims to offer a panoramic view of the influence and symbolic representation of the sea in Valparaiso´s literature, through a comparative analysis of two moments of its narrative production: 20th century and 21st century. It is proposed that the link between Valparaíso’s literary production with the oceanic component configures an aesthetic whose evolution is It can explain from the relationship that the inhabitant establishes with its coastal edge. The presence of a maritime imaginary is then verified that in the fictional discourse experiences a process of location and displacement, which reflects the physical transformations and the political-social disputes that have occurred within the territory, identifying in its symbolic recreation a stage of urban imaginary with very defined attributes, which later leads to another with characteristics of an urban ghost.

Es una presencia de tipo elemental que integra y genera aquello que se podría considerar como lo imaginario central de la cultura de una ciudad-puerto. Este artículo tiene por objetivo ofrecer una mirada panorámica del influjo y representación simbólica del mar en la narrativa porteña, a través de un análisis comparativo de dos períodos: siglo XX y siglo XXI. Se plantea que el vínculo de la producción literaria de Valparaíso con el componente oceánico configura una estética cuya evolución se puede explicar desde la relación que el habitante establece con su borde costero. Se constata entonces la presencia de un imaginario marítimo que en el discurso ficcional experimenta un proceso de emplazamiento y desplazamiento, que refleja las transformaciones físicas y las disputas político-sociales que se han dado al interior del territorio, identificando en su recreación simbólica un estadio de imaginarios urbanos con atributos muy definidos, el cual deriva posteriormente en otro con características propias de fantasma urbano.O mar é um elemento que compõe de forma decisiva a geografia de Valparaíso, determinando formas de habitar o território, o caráter de seus habitantes, modos de falar, sistemas de produção e redes sociais. É uma presença de tipo elementar que integra e gera o que pode ser considerado o imaginário central da cultura de uma cidade-porto. Este artigo tem como objetivo oferecer uma visão panorâmica da influência e representação simbólica do mar na narrativa de Valparaíso, por meio de uma análise comparativa de dois períodos: século XX e século XXI. Propõe-se que a ligação entre a produção literária de Valparaíso e a componente oceânica configura uma estética cuja evolução pode ser explicada a partir da relação que o habitante estabelece com sua orla costeira.
