Resumo: In this comparative study, we will discuss how Mário Vargas Llosa worked the myopia metaphor to represent the Latin American intellectuals who, just like Euclides da Cunha, decided to break with the stereotypical representations about the sertão as they approached the reality analyzed. Thus, in La Guerra del Fin del Mundo, a 1981 novel, Vargas Llosa works on this sign by narrating a myopic journalist’s journey through northeastern Brazil, at the height of the Canudos war. Journey. It is, therefore, from the demands of his myopia that this character could make a more detailed representation of the sertão, which involved the encounter with a different and transformative universe. Also, Vargas Llosa, a myopic intellectual, unable to see the Brazilian sertão without the mists that cultural and political distance imposed, uses Os Sertões: a campanha de Canudos (1902), Euclides’ great work, as magnifying glasses to see beyond the Tordesillas.

Assim, em La guerra del fin del mundo, romance de 1981, Llosa trabalha esse signo com maestria, narrando a jornada de um jornalista míope pelo nordeste brasileiro, no epicentro da Guerra de Canudos. É, por conseguinte, a partir das exigências de sua miopia que essa personagem pôde realizar uma representação mais detalhada do sertão, que envolveu o encontro com um universo diferente e transformador.
