(In)visibility in academic-text proofreading: an other in the web of meanings

Resumo: Based on Bakhtin’s theory and on ergology, this paper seeks to analyze aspects of the work of academic-text proofreaders. It observes alterity relationships from interactions between a proofreader and a Doctorate candidate during part of the proofreading process for a Doctorate dissertation. Through excerpts from the text and respective commentary on them, the paper analyzes statements pertinent to the relationship between the proofreader’s words and the Doctorate candidate’s words. As a result we realized that, while implying a high degree of invisibility, proofreading brings to the process an important other, who constitutes the web of meanings that make up the final version of the proofread work.

Para tanto, observa relações de alteridade a partir de interações entre uma revisora e uma doutoranda durante parte do processo de revisão textual de uma tese de doutoramento. A reflexão contempla a análise de enunciados, via excertos de textos e respectivos comentários, no que se refere à relação entre as palavras da revisora e as palavras da doutoranda.
