The time of the other from a dialogical perspective: Horizontality vs. socio-economic hierarchy in public-private debate

This paper investigates how extraverbal aspects imply asymmetry in speech turn-taking in discursive interaction’s dynamics, shedding light on ways the use of language can establish hierarchy in the social fabric. In order to do so, it analyses a conversation regarding a public-private deadlock (Teatro Oficina) through the interweaving of two approaches: the oral text analysis, as proposed by Projeto da Norma Urbana Linguística Culta, and principles of the Dialogic Discourse Analysis. Especially supported by the notion of speech turn-taking and the social orientation of the utterance, the study finds that the distribution of speech turns can be subject to the importance of socio-economic hierarchy when it comes to the way conflicts of interests are dealt with even in a democratic environment, which raises questions about the correlation between purchasing power and the right to speak.
