This work has as main objective to analyze the main character of the novel Margarida La Rocque: a ilha dos demônios (1949), by Dinah Silveira de Queiroz. The author produced wide and diversified work – which transited from historical novel to scientific fiction. The narratives of the writer, in general, are centered in female characters, and, in Margarida, this character shows herself a woman who seeks new possible paths for herself. This way, the novel is among those ones belonging to a transition phase in which the asymmetries of gender relations were beginning to be put under discussion. Thus, the theoretical foundation of this research consists largely of feminist theory and criticism; for this, Brazilian scholars such as Rita Schmidt, Constância Lima Duarte, Ruth Silviano Brandão have been privileged, among others. But authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Elaine Showalter, were also used, besides the study of Joanne Frye about the female narrator-character.
