Resumo: The purpose of this article is to evaluate the strategies used by Nelson Werneck Sodré in the elaboration of Panorama do Segundo Império, originally published in 1939. As Sodré’s first work dedicated to historical studies of Brazil, this book predates his alignment with the theoretical frameworks of Marxism, when the author published his best known works. For this reason, Sodré did not re-edit that work in the following decades, just as he retired a large part of his bibliography released until the 1940s. In the case of Panorama do Segundo Império, the main references used by Sodré are intellectuals belonging to the authoritarian field of Brazilian political and social thought, such as Azevedo Amaral and Oliveira Viana. At the same time, it can be seen that the concepts learned from those authors are used to analyze the period without being limited to linear chronologies and actions of the political figures of the time, an aspect in which Reinhart Koselleck’s reflections help us understand Sodré’s historiographical procedures.

Como primeiro trabalho de Sodré dedicado aos estudos históricos do Brasil, esse livro é anterior a seu alinhamento com os marcos teóricos do marxismo, quando o autor publicou suas obras mais conhecidas. Por esse motivo, Sodré não reeditou aquele trabalho nas décadas seguintes, assim como aposentou grande parte de sua bibliografia lançada até a década de 1940. No caso de Panorama do Segundo Império, as principais referências utilizadas por Sodré são intelectuais que pertencem ao campo autoritário do pensamento político e social brasileiro, como Azevedo Amaral e Oliveira Viana.
