Youth temporalities and the impacts of the pandemic context

Resumo: This article considers the impacts of the pandemic context on how young people experience time. To do so, we started with conversations mediated by social media with four young people of diff erent ages, educational backgrounds, and life contexts, all residing in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The analysis of these conversations was supported by authors who have been dedicated to understanding diff erent dimensions of youth temporalities, such as Carmen Leccardi and José Machado Pais. It was possible to observe changes in the perceptions of temporality, both in the organization of daily time and in projections about the future. For some young people, time seemed to have accelerated while for others, time appeared to be more sluggish and tedious. In addition, changes in school trajectories were identifi ed by some young people as generators of changes in their expectations for the future.

Para ello partimos de conversaciones mediadas por redes sociales con cuatro jóvenes de diferentes edades, antecedentes educacionales y contextos de vida, todos residentes en Porto Alegre (RS), Brazil. El análisis del campo empírico fue apoyado por autores que se han dedicado a comprender diferentes dimensiones de las temporalidades juveniles, como Carmen Leccardi y José Machado Pais. Fue posible observar cambios en las percepciones de la temporalidad en dos dimensiones: en la organización del tiempo diario y en las proyecciones sobre el futuro. Para algunos jóvenes, el tiempo pareció haberse acelerado, mientras para otros, el tiempo pareció haberse vuelto más lento y aburrido. Además, algunos jóvenes identifi caron los cambios em sus trayectorias escolares como generadores de cambios en sus expectativas de futuro.Este artigo objetiva refletir sobre os impactos do contexto de pandemia nos modos como jovens experienciam o tempo. Para tanto, partimos de conversas mediadas pelas redes sociais com quatro jovens de diferentes idades, percursos escolares e contextos de vida, todos residentes em Porto Alegre (RS), Brasil. A análise do campo empírico se amparou em autores que vêm se dedicando a compreender diferentes dimensões das temporalidades juvenis, como Carmen Leccardi e José Machado Pais. Foi possível constatar mudanças nas percepções de temporalidade, que puderam ser observadas em duas dimensões: na organização do tempo cotidiano e nas projeções acerca do futuro. Para alguns jovens, o tempo pareceu ter acelerado enquanto para outros, o tempo pareceu mais arrastado e entediante.
