A professor, researcher, photographer and consumer observing post-modern school children

Resumo: In this paper, childhood is understood as a cultural, social, historical construction that is subject to changes. Contemporary cultural conditions, being marked by the media and consumption habits, have both produced childhoods that are different from the naïve, docile, adult-dependent modern childhood, and modified the ways children experience this period regarded as peculiar to them. Furthermore, the way we see and explain children depends on the theoretical lenses we use. One of the main goals of this paper is to provide visibility to poor children who have attended some schools in Porto Alegre, Brazil, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, by means of the theoretical lenses of the Cultural Studies. In order to provide such visibility, the positions taken by the author along the research process as a professor, researcher, photographer and consumer have enabled her to see contemporary children living their post-modern childhood.

Se supone que las condiciones culturales contemporáneas, marcadas por los medios de comunicación y por el consumo, producen infancias distintas a la infancia moderna – ingenua, dócil, dependiente – y modifican las formas en que los niños vivirían ese período considerado como propio de ellos. Se entiende, también, que el modo como vemos y explicamos la niñez depende de las lentes teóricas que utilizamos. Este artículo tiene como uno de sus objetivos hacer visibles a los niños pobres que frecuentan algunas escuelas del municipio de Porto Alegre (RS) en este inicio del siglo XXI, por medio de las lentes teóricas de los Estudios Culturales. Para promover esta visibilidad, se utilizan las posiciones tomadas por la estudiosa durante el proceso de investigación – profesora, investigadora, fotógrafa y consumidora –, que permiten observar niños contemporáneos que viven una infanciapos-moderna.Neste artigo, entende-se que a infância é uma construção cultural, social e histórica, sujeita a mudanças. Supõe-se que as condições culturais contemporâneas, marcadas pela mídia e pelo consumo, produzem infâncias distintas da infância moderna – ingênua, dócil, dependente – e modificam as formas de as crianças viverem esse período tido como próprio delas. Entende-se, também, que o modo como vemos e explicamos as crianças depende das lentes teóricas que utilizamos. Este artigo tem como um de seus objetivos dar visibilidade às crianças pobres que frequentam algumas escolas do município de Porto Alegre (RS) neste início do século XXI, por meio das lentes teóricas dos Estudos Culturais.
