The siren song of innovation at the community university: from insulation to the risk of hyperporosity

Resumo: New demands and functions are placed on higher education in the so-called knowledge society. Universities are urged to change and innovate, aiming to contribute to economic growth and wealth creation. In the field of knowledge production, a double challenge arises in the context of non-profit private universities in Brazil: on the one hand, requirements specific to entering a market game for innovation, in the sense of applied research, useful to the productive sector, and, on the other, the maintenance of disinterested research. This article analyzes the case of regional community universities in Rio Grande do Sul from the question: what are the trends in conducting university research in view of a scenario of new demands in terms of innovation and approximation with the productive sector? Through field investigation, carried out through interviews with members of the universities under study, followed by a logical deduction between the collected data and the literature, it is argued that such universities, in a context of crisis resulting from the intensification of market competition, are susceptible to fall into a siren song, distancing themselves from a necessary level of insulation towards a risky hyperporosity with the market.

En el campo de la producción de conocimiento, surge un doble desafío en el contexto de las universidades privadas sin fines de lucro en Brasil: por un lado, requisitos específicos para ingresar a un juego de mercado para la innovación, en el sentido de investigación aplicada, útil para el sector productivo y, por otro, el mantenimiento de una investigación desinteresada. Este artículo analiza el caso de las universidades comunitarias regionales en Rio Grande do Sul a partir de la pregunta: ¿cuáles son las tendencias en la realización de la investigación universitaria ante un escenario de nuevas demandas en términos de innovación y aproximación con el sector productivo? A través de una investigación de campo, realizada a través de entrevistas con miembros de las universidades en estudio, seguida de una deducción lógica entre los datos recolectados y la literatura, se argumenta que dichas universidades, en un contexto de crisis producto de la intensificación de la competencia de mercado, están susceptibles de caer en un canto de sirena, alejándose de un necesario nivel de aislamiento hacia una riesgosa hiperporosidad con el mercado.Novas demandas e funções são postas à educação superior na chamada sociedade do conhecimento. As universidades são instadas a mudar e inovar, visando contribuir para o crescimento econômico e a criação de riquezas. No âmbito da produção do conhecimento, um duplo desafio se desenha no contexto das universidades privadas sem fins lucrativos brasileiras: por um lado, exigências próprias do ingresso em um jogo de mercado por inovação, no sentido da pesquisa aplicada, útil ao setor produtivo, e, por outro, a manutenção da pesquisa desinteressada. O presente artigo analisa o caso das universidades comunitárias regionais do Rio Grande do Sul a partir da questão: quais as tendências na condução da pesquisa universitária diante de um cenário de novas exigências em termos de inovação e aproximação com o setor produtivo?
