Catimbó-Jurema: A critical analysis of the multimodal discourse on the religious social imaginary in the film O Auto da Compadecida

Resumo: | In contemporary society, there are countless demands created daily as a result of the intersectional relationships that make up the identity experiences of individuals and different social groups, based on social markers of difference such as gender, sexuality, race, class, ethnicity, religious affiliation and disability, that often become a catalyst for prejudice and discrimination. In this context, we investigate, in this paper, the construction of the sociodiscursive imaginary about Catimbó-Jurema through the analysis of selected scenes from the movie O Auto da Compadecida (2000), with theoretical-methodological and critical support of the systemic-functional grammar (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014), more specifically of the transitivity system of the experiential metafunction, the grammar of visual design (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2021), focusing on the representational and compositional metafunctions, and critical discourse analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 1995, 2015; RESENDE; RAMALHO, 2006), based on Fairclough’s tridimensional model, in a transdisciplinary relationship with studies in anthropology, religious sciences, sociology and philosophy. Overall results of the critical and systemic-functional analyses of the multimodal discourse on Catimbó-Jurema in the film O Auto da Compadecida indicate that the construction of this social imaginary occurs through the mobilization of verbal and image resources that seek to associate Afro-indigenous religions with the demonic at the intersection of discourses and social practices that are (re)articulated in complex, historical and situated ways. Lastly, we understand that the analyses carried out allowed us to have a critical view not only regarding the use of the multimodal resources in this film, but also with regard to the interrelationships between the meaning-making processes through language and the intelligibilities that are also part of the sociocultural imaginary. |

En ese contexto, investigamos, en este artículo, la construcción del imaginario sociodiscursivo sobre Catimbó-Jurema a través del análisis de escenas seleccionadas de la película O Auto da Compadecida (2000), con apoyo teórico-metodológico y crítico de la gramática sistémico-funcional (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014), más específicamente del sistema de transitividad de la metafunción experiencial, la gramática del diseño visual (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2021), centrándose en las metafunciones representacional y composicional, y del análisis crítico del discurso (FAIRCLOUGH, 1995, 2015; RESENDE; RAMALHO, 2006), basado en el modelo tridimensional de Fairclough, en una relación transdisciplinar con estudios de antropología, ciencias religiosas, sociología y filosofía. Resultados generales de los análisis críticos y sistémico-funcionales del discurso multimodal sobre el Catimbó-Jurema en la película O Auto da Compadecida indican que la construcción de este imaginario social ocurre a través de la movilización de recursos verbales e imaginarios que buscan asociar las religiones afroindígenas con lo demoníaco en la intersección de discursos y prácticas sociales que se (re)articulan de maneras complejas, históricas y situadas. Por fin, entendemos que los análisis realizados permitieron tener una mirada crítica no solo en cuanto al uso de recursos multimodales, sino también en cuanto a las interrelaciones entre los procesos de construcción de sentido a través del lenguaje y las inteligibilidades que también forman parte del imaginario sociocultural.Na sociedade contemporânea, são inúmeras as demandas criadas cotidianamente decorrentes das relações interseccionais que compõem as experiências identitárias de indivíduos e de grupos sociais diversos, com base em marcadores sociais da diferença como gênero, sexualidade, raça, classe, etnia, afiliação religiosa e deficiência, que frequentemente se tornam catalizadoras de preconceitos e de discriminação. Diante desse contexto, investigamos, neste artigo, a construção do imaginário sociodiscursivo sobre o Catimbó-Jurema por meio da análise de quadros de cenas selecionadas do filme O Auto da Compadecida (2000), com suporte teórico-metodológico e crítico da gramática sistêmico-funcional (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014), mais especificamente do sistema de transitividade da metafunção experiencial, da gramática do design visual (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2021), com foco nas metafunções representacional e composicional, e da análise crítica do discurso (FAIRCLOUGH, 1995, 2015; RESENDE; RAMALHO, 2006), com base no modelo tridimensional de Fairclough, em relação transdisciplinar com estudos em antropologia, ciências da religião, sociologia e filosofia. Resultados gerais das análises críticas e sistêmico-funcionais do discurso multimodal sobre o Catimbó-Jurema no filme O Auto da Compadecida apontam que a construção desse imaginário social ocorre por meio da mobilização de recursos verbais e imagéticos que buscam associar religiões afro-indígenas ao demoníaco na intersecção de discursos e práticas sociais que se (re)articulam de formas complexas, históricas e situadas. Por fim, compreendemos que as análises empreendidas nos possibilitaram uma visão crítica não apenas quanto à utilização dos recursos multimodais neste filme, mas também no que diz respeito às inter-relações entre os processos de construção de sentido por meio da linguagem e as inteligibilidades que também são parte do imaginário sociocultural.
