Resumo: This text aims to present the slave community that lived on the farm of St. Christopher, located in the captaincy of Rio de Janeiro, during some moments of the eighteenth century. Three types of sources are used for this purpose: 1. the listing made in 1759 at the time of the kidnapping of the farm, caused by the order of expulsion of the religious of the Company of Jesus of Portugal and its domains; 2. a new evaluation of these slaves made in 1761 from the denunciations that property was being lost and slaves were runway or causing riots; 3. The records of the sales of his labor in the auctions that took place in the square of Rio de Janeiro between 1761 and 1762. This analysis intends to demonstrate the complex family structure that the Jesuits were able to establish between their captives and the subsequent dismantling of these family units after the expulsion of the religious and the sale of their property. In addition, it is tried to demonstrate that the bidding on the part of these slaves were men who lived with this community of captives and, therefore, knew who they were buying.

Editora da PUCRS - ediPUCRS2018-12-21info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/index.php/iberoamericana/article/view/2918710.15448/1980-864X.2018.3.29187Estudos Ibero-Americanos; Vol. 44 No. 3 (2018): Dossier: Colors, Classifications and Social Categories: Africans in the Iberian Empires, 16th to the 19th Centuries; 536-547Estudos Ibero-Americanos; Vol. 44 Núm. 3 (2018): Dossier: Colores, clasificaciones y categorías sociales: los africanos en los imperios ibéricos, del siglo XVI hasta el XIX; 536-547Estudos Ibero-Americanos; v. 44 n. 3 (2018): Dossiê: Cores, classificações e categorias sociais: os africanos nos impérios ibéricos, séculos XVI a XIX; 536-5471980-864X0101-406410.15448/1980-864X.2018.3reponame:Estudos Ibero-Americanosinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS)instacron:PUC_RSporhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/index.php/iberoamericana/article/view/29187/17498Copyright (c) 2018 MARCIA Sueli AMANTINOhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAmantino, Marcia Sueli2019-01-18T14:45:08Zoai:ojs.revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br:article/29187Revistahttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/index.php/iberoamericanaPRIhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/index.php/iberoamericana/oaieditora.periodicos@pucrs.br||eia@pucrs.br1980-864X0101-4064opendoar:2019-01-18T14:45:08Estudos Ibero-Americanos - Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS)false
