Popular movements and its political outcomes in the Southern Cone during the 1970s: the Frente Amplio’s Base Committees in Uruguay and the Committees of the Chilean Unidad Popular in a comparative perspective

Resumo: In this article, I propose a comparison between the experiences of the Frente Amplio’s Base Committees in Uruguay and the Committees of Chilean Unidad Popular in the early 1970s. Both the FA and the UP constituted mass movements, that used a strategy of political mobilization through committees which had a broad popular basis. Since they were multiparty alliances, the committees of the Frente Amplio and of the Unidad Popular were frequented by militants and sympathizers of different forces, which sometimes caused friction and controversy. To carry out this comparison, I analyzed internal documentation of the political movements and press releases on them, as well as interviews with some of their former members. I could identify some polemics about these organizations real importance and its place in the party’s structure, revealing different positions within the left-wing forces in Uruguay and Chile.

Aunque fueran coaliciones electorales, tanto el FA como la UP  se constituyeron también como movimientos de masa, utilizando la estrategia de la movilización política a través de comités que contaban con grande participación popular. Por tratarse de alianzas multipartidarias, los comités del Frente Amplio y de la Unidad Popular eran frecuentados por militantes y simpatizantes de las diferentes fuerzas, lo que en determinadas ocasiones generaba fricciones y polémicas. Además, debido al importante papel que desempeñaron en las elecciones, fue necesario debatir internamente cuál sería el lugar de esos organismos en la estructura partidista, trayendo a la luz diferentes posiciones en el seno de las izquierdas en Uruguay y Chile. Como fuentes primarias, se analizó la prensa y la documentación interna de los partidos, además de entrevistas con algunos de sus antiguos integrantes.Busca-se no presente artigo comparar a experiência dos Comitês de Base da Frente Ampla uruguaia e dos Comitês da Unidade Popular chilena no princípio dos anos 1970. Embora fossem coalizões eleitorais, tanto a FA quanto a UP se constituíram também como movimentos de massa, utilizando-se da estratégia da mobilização política através de Comitês que contavam com grande participação popular. Por se tratarem de alianças multipartidárias, os Comitês da Frente Ampla e da Unidade Popular eram frequentados por militantes e simpatizantes das diferentes forças, o que em determinadas ocasiões gerava atritos e polêmicas. Além disso, devido ao importante papel que desempenharam nas eleições, foi preciso debater internamente qual seria o lugar desses organismos na estrutura partidária, trazendo à tona diferentes posições no seio das esquerdas no Uruguai e no Chile.
