Border areas and Atlantic construction: Canary Islands and Africa during the Portuguese aggregation to the Hispanic Monarchy

Resumo: This research studies the articulation of the Atlantic during the period of the Portuguese aggregation to the Hispanic Monarchy. This paper arises from the analysis of social and economic relations between intra-Atlantic territories –the islands, with their closest neighbour, the African continent. The Atlantic dynamics during the period of the Iberian Union is analysed by the geographical, political and economic specificities of this island. The networks that act between the insulars and the African continent are also examined. Finally, economic interests, products exchanged and agents are investigated in order to show a cross-border social and economic Atlantic.

Finally, economic interests, products exchanged and agents are investigated in order to show a cross-border social and economic Atlantic. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo abordar la articulación del Atlántico durante el periodo de la agregación portuguesa a la Monarquía Hispánica a partir del estudio de las relaciones sociales y económicas entre los espacios intra-atlánticos –, las islas, con su entorno más cercano, el continente africano. Este trabajo pretende analizar la dinámica atlántica durante el periodo de la Unión Ibérica a través del estudio de las especificidades de estas islas en su entorno geográfico, político y económico, así como las redes que actúan entre ella y el continente africano. Trataremos los intereses económicos, los productos intercambiados y los agentes que participan con el objetivo de mostrar un Atlántico social y económico transfronterizo. Esta investigação tem como objetivo analisar a articulação do Atlântico durante o período da agregação portuguesa à Monarquia Hispânica a partir do estudo das relações sociais e econômicas entre os espaços intra-atlânticos, as ilhas, com seu meio mais próximo, o continente africano. Estuda a dinâmica atlântica durante o período da União Ibérica através do estudo das especificidades dessas ilhas em seu meio geográfico, político e econômico, bem como as redes que participam entre elas e o continente africano.
