Pan Americanism and the project of building a common past for the countries of Americas: An analysis of the activities of the Pan American Union through the Pan American Patriots Collection

Resumo: This article is divided into two sections. The first section is dedicated to the study of the Pan American Union, with emphasis on the presentation of its central objectives. One of these goals was to create a sense of unity among the different countries of Americas. In the second section, a publication from the Pan American Union will be analyzed - the collection entitled “Pan American Patriots”, will be analyzed. In this article it will be argued that the Pan American Union sought to foster the idea of pan-Americanism, which gains a past that has since embraced much of the countries of the Americas. The article is included in the area of the history of historiography and is based on the analyzes developed by the decolonial studies.

En este artículo se argumentará que la Unión Panamericana buscó fomentar la idea del panamericanismo, que gana un pasado que desde entonces ha abarcado gran parte de los países de las Américas. El artículo se enmarca dentro del área de la historia de la historiografía y parte de los análisis desarrollados por los estudios descoloniales.Este artigo se divide em duas seções. A primeira delas é dedicada ao estudo da União Pan-Americana, com ênfase para a apresentação de seus objetivos centrais. Um destes objetivos foi a busca por criar um sentimento de unidade entre os diferentes países das Américas. Na segunda seção será analisada uma publicação da União Pan-Americana – a coleção intitulada “Pan-American Patriots”2. Neste artigo será argumentado que a União Pan-Americana buscou fomentar a ideia de pan-americanismo, a qual ganha um passado que, a partir de então, passa a abarcar boa parte dos países das Américas.
