Revolution, reform and democracy: civil society in Portugal and Spain, 1960s-2000s

Resumo: Portugal and Spain had radically divergent paths to democracy: social revolution in Portugal and reform in Spain. In this paper, the author suggests that a revolutionary path to democracy had a positive effect on self-organizing capabilities of the middle and working classes. Though not always lead to democratic regimes, social revolutions tend to institutionalize mechanisms that encourage civic participation of the masses. Thus, democracies arising from a revolutionary process tend to offer more opportunities and mechanisms for participation and civic inclusion of the masses in national political life.

En este trabajo, el autor sugiere que una vía revolucionaria a la democracia tuvo un efecto positivo sobre la capacidad de auto-organización de las clases medias y trabajadoras. Aunque no siempre desembocan en regímenes democráticos, las revoluciones sociales tienden a institucionalizar mecanismos que fomenten la participación ciudadana de las masas. Por lo tanto, las democracias que surgen de un proceso revolucionario tienden a ofrecer más oportunidades y mecanismos de participación e inclusión ciudadana de las masas en la vida política nacional.Portugal e Espanha tiveram caminhos para a democracia radicalmente divergentes: revolução social em Portugal e reforma na Espanha. Neste texto, o autor sugere que uma trajetória revolucionária para a democracia teve um efeito positivo nas capacidades de auto-organização das classes médias e trabalhadoras. Embora nem sempre conduzam a regimes democráticos, as revoluções sociais tendem a institucionalizar mecanismos que estimulam a participação cívica das massas.
