Status and Racial Classifications in Mexico: the Use of Categories of Social and Racial Ranking Among the Afro-Descendent Population

Resumo: This article explores the classifications and categories employed to rank Afro-descendants during the 1521-1821 period in New Spain, Mexico, including the use of categories such as nación, casta, calidad and race. The study starts with an examination of the African presence in historical perspective, as well as the economic and social role of Africans and their descendants in Mexico. Then, it engages with the different definitions employed to classify and categorize the African populations, and its links with the expansion of the transatlantic slave trade. In the last section, I examine how categories and classifications were employed, in order to stress how their uses were complex, ambiguous, and arbitrary. Despite the existence of social and racial classifications, social mobility and interactions prevailed in colonial Mexico, making efforts to classify and rank people even more subjective and problematic.

Para ello, primero se hará una pequeña semblanza histórica de la importancia de las personas de origen africano en el México virreinal y las diversas circunstancias que vivieron. Después se analizará el significado y las diferencias entre las concepciones sobre nación, calidad, castas o raza con el fin de comprender que estos conceptos tuvieron diferentes funciones de acuerdo con la época y a su relación con hechos como el auge del comercio de personas africanas. O texto inicia com uma discussão sobre a importância histórica da presença africana e de seus descendentes no Vice-Reino da Nova Espanha, no atual México, e suas condições de vida. Posteriormente, o texto examina as diferentes definições dos conceitos de nação, qualidade, casta e raça. Esses conceitos tiveram funções e usos variados e é importante considerar como estavam relacionados com a expansão do comércio de africanos escravizados.
