Images of inequality in Rio de Janeiro's photobooks: thevisuality in the history of a concept

Resumo: The city of Rio de Janeiro and the themes that interweave its history have been covered by the most diverse types of photographic books, launched in Brazil and abroad, for over a century. Considering the complex and multifaceted nature of textual and visual narratives presented in these works, as well as the requirement of a multidisciplinary approach to the theme of inequality within a history of concepts, this article seeks to problematize the visuality of poverty in the representation of the so called “Carioca landscape”, taken here as a symbolic and patrimonial construction. The current research is premised on the polysemy of landscape and inequality and their multiple epistemological dimensions, as concepts that cross philosophy, law, sociology and history, as well as literature and the arts in general. The article deals more closely with the life and work of German photographer Hans Mann (?-1966) and the photo books heproduced on South America, published between the 1940s and 1960s, specially the one dedicated to Rio de Janeiro (Zauberhaftes Rio/Strolling through Rio, 1958).

Este artículo, considerando la naturaleza compleja y multifacética de las narrativas textuales y visuales presentadas en esas obras, así como la exigencia de un enfoque multidisciplinario para el tema de la desigualdad en el marco de una historia de los conceptos, busca problematizar la visualidad de la pobreza en la representación del “paisaje Carioca”, tomada aquí como una construcción simbólica y patrimonial. La investigación en curso tiene por premisa la polisemia del paisaje y de la desigualdad y sus múltiples dimensiones epistemológicas, como conceptos que atraviesan la filosofía, el derecho, la sociología y la historia, tanto como la literatura y las artes en general. El artículo trata más detenidamente de la vida y la obra del fotógrafo alemán Hans Mann (?-1966) y los fotolivros que realizó sobre América del Sur, publicados entre las décadas de 1940 y 1960, destacándose entre ellos el dedicado al Río de Janeiro (ZauberhaftesRío / StrollingthroughRío, 1958).A cidade do Rio de Janeiro e os temas que entrelaçam sua história têm sido cobertos por livros fotográficos dos mais diversos tipos, lançados no Brasil e no exterior, há mais de um século. Este artigo, considerando a natureza complexa e multifacetada das narrativas textuais e visuais apresentadas nessas obras, bem como a exigência de uma abordagem multidisciplinar para o tema da desigualdade no âmbito de uma história dos conceitos, procura problematizar a visualidade da pobreza na representação da “paisagem carioca”, tomada aqui como uma construção simbólica e patrimonial. A pesquisa em curso tem por premissa a polissemia da paisagem e da desigualdade e suas múltiplas dimensões epistemológicas, como conceitos que atravessam a filosofia, o direito, a sociologia e a história, tanto quanto a literatura e as artes em geral.
