Latin America in the Non-Aligned Movement: An issue of autonomy and sovereignty, 1961-1990

Resumo: The article studies the participation of Latin American nations in the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War. It inquire about the reasons that led a significant number of countries in the continent to join the Movement, most of them between 1973 and 1983. Through the analysis of primary and secondary sources, seven cases are examined: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama, and Peru. It is established that, mainly, the Latin American nations sought, through their participation in the Movement, to increase their autonomy and deepen or complete their sovereignty. Finally, it is argued that the Non Alignment in Latin America was related more to the long history of decolonization than to the conjunctural Cold War.

Mediante el análisis de fuentes primarias y secundarias se examinan siete casos: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Panamá y Perú. Se establece que, principalmente, las naciones latinoamericanas buscaron, a través de su participación en el Movimiento, incrementar su autonomía y profundizar o completar su soberanía. Através da análise de fontes primárias e secundárias, sete casos são examinados: Argentina, Chile, Colômbia, Cuba, Nicarágua, Panamá e Peru. Estabelece-se que, principalmente, as nações latino-americanas procuraram, através de sua participação no Movimento, aumentar sua autonomia e aprofundar ou completar sua soberania.
