Sculptures in Chile: dilemmas, agents and influences

Resumo: The development of sculpture in Chile is examined in this article, from its beginning where it was taught within the academic structure of the country, up to the middle of the past century. The article presents three crucial points of analysis: The relationship of the Chilean State with the esthetic processes; the classical model as the formal and iconographic support for national sculpture, and finally, the relationship between sculpturing activity and the European schools (influences). Besides, it analysis those authors that have had a higher presence and gravitation in the national artistical scenario, providing data about the academic formation, work and outmark in our artistical media. On the other hand it provides information about how it evolves from a classic esthetic model that had characterized the art and the national authors during the XIX century XIX to artistical concepts and iconographic repertories more identified with the latest proposals that begin to develop in the country during the first decades of the XX century. The work establishes also some parallelisms between the Chilean sculpture and the other American countries.

Plantea tres ejes de análisis: la relación del Estado chileno con los procesos estéticos; el modelo clásico como soporte formal e iconográfico de la escultura nacional y, finalmente, la relación de la actividad escultórica con las escuelas europeas (influjos). Analiza, además, aquellos autores que han tenido una mayor presencia y gravitación en el escenario artístico nacional, entregando antecedentes acerca de su formación académica, obras y relevancia en nuestro medio artístico. De otra parte proporciona información acerca de como se evoluciona desde un modelo estético clásico, que había caracterizado al arte y a los autores nacionales durante el siglo XIX, hacia conceptos artísticos y repertorios iconográficos más identificados con las propuestas vanguardistas, que se comienzan a desarrollar en el país durante las primaras décadas del siglo XX. El trabajo establece también algunos paralelismos entre la escultura chilena y la de otros países ameri- canos.Este artigo examina o desenvolvimento da escultura no Chile, desde quando começou a ser ensinada dentro de uma estrutura acadêmica até a metade do século passado. A proposta se desenvolve em três eixos de análise: a relação do Estado chileno com os processos estéticos; o modelo clássico como suporte formal e iconográfico da escultura nacional e, por fim, a relação da atividade escultórica com as influências das escolas europeias. Também são analisados aqueles autores que tiveram maior presença e circulação no cenário artístico nacional, apresentando antecedentes sobre sua formação acadêmica e obras de relevância no meio artístico.Por outro lado, apresentam-se informações sobre a evolução a partir do modelo estético, que havia caracterizado a arte e os autores nacionais durante o século XIX, até os conceitos artísticos e repertórios iconográficos mais identificados com as propostas vanguardistas, que começaram a se desenvolver no país durante as primeiras décadas do século XX.
