Aspects of popular religiosity in maritime culture in the Atlantic, 16th to 19th centuries

Resumo: The world of maritime work between the 16th and 19th centuries was marked by the spatial circulation of large numbers of men. The long absence of the institutions and the community of origin there was consequences to the construction of the maritime culture in the Atlantic. It will be analyzed here in the aspects related to religiosity. I'll highlight aspect such as onboard ceremonies, the question of Maria’s devotion and Catholic saints and a brief study of deviations and heterodoxies of sailors processed by the Portuguese Inquisition.

El largo alejamiento de la comunidad de origen y de las instituciones allí existentes tuvo implicaciones en la construcción de una cultura marítima en el Atlántico, y aquí se analizarán aspectos relacionados con la religiosidad expresada a bordo y en el marco de los viajes de largo recorrido. Se pondrá de relieve aspectos tales como ceremonias de bordo, el tema de la devoción mariana y santos católicos y un breve estudio de las desviaciones y heterodoxias de los marinos procesados por la Inquisición portuguesa.O mundo do trabalho marítimo entre os séculos XVI e XIX foi marcado pela circulação espacial de grande número de pessoas. O longo afastamento da comunidade de origem e das instituições ali existentes teve implicações na construção de uma cultura marítima no Atlântico.
