The differential development in the gas industry in some small Spanish cities (1842-1924)

Resumo: The different rates of the technical networks growth – of gas, electricity, rail-roads or, more recently, the electronical system – is generally related to its possibilities of expansion, this possibilities, as well, depend on two essential conditions: a volume of continued demand and a degree of increasing reinvestment. Our contribution is essentially based on showing the effects of these two conditions in three Spanish cities of the 19th century: Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga. In these three cities, due to its different characteristics, the development of gas network had different behaviors, which allows to reach some significant conclusions.

Nuestra contribución trata de mostrar los efectos de estas dos condiciones en tres ciudades españolas del siglo XIX: Barcelona, Madrid y Málaga. En las tres ciudades, debido a sus distintas características, el desarrollo de la red de gas tenía comportamientos diferentes, lo que permite llegar a algunas conclusiones significativas. O ritmo diferente de crescimento das redes técnicas – de gás, de eletricidade, das ferrovias e, mais recentemente, de informática – está relacionado, geralmente, à possibilidade de expansão que, por sua vez, depende de duas condições essenciais: uma que é o volume de demanda e outra o grau de investimento relacionado com o crescimento da demanda. Nossa contribuição tenta demonstrar os efeitos dessas duas condições em três cidades espanholas do século XIX: Barcelona, Madrid e Málaga.
