POLITICS IN THE STREETS: public spaces in the imperial city of Rio de Janeiro

Resumo: The political dimension of the public manifestations that happened in the streets of Rio de Janeiro between 1820 and 1840, at the same time considered as city and Court, points out to changes that were occurring in the public spaces during the transition from absolutism to political modernity. The different occupations of the commerce quarters. squares and public places expressed a "dispute" for the prominence of the pólis — political interferences that were delimited by the urban scene predominantly traditional and at the same time tried to interfere and transform it.

La dimensión política de las manifestaciones públicas que ocurrieron en las calles de Río de Janeiro entre 1820 y 1840 en el mismo tiempo considerado como la ciudad y la Corte, señala los cambios que se estaban produciendo en los espacios públicos durante la transición del absolutismo a la modernidad política. Las diferentes ocupaciones de los sectores de comercio, plazas y lugares públicos expresóla "disputa" por la prominencia de las polis – interferencias políticas que se delimitaron por la escena urbana predominantemente tradicional y al mismo tiempo trataron de interferir y transformarlo.A dimensão política das manifestações públicas que aconteceram nas ruas do Rio de Janeiro entre 1820 e 1840, ao mesmo tempo considerada como cidade e Corte, aponta para as mudanças que estavam ocorrendo nos espaços públicos durante a transição do absolutismo para a modernidade política.
