Resumo: Purpose: To evaluated shear bond strength to enamel of orthodontic brackets bonded with different combinations of composite/adhesive. This study specifically tested an adhesive with antimicrobial agents added to its composition. Methods: Orthodontic brackets were bonded to the flattened enamel surface of 20 bovine incisors. Two experimental group were tested (n=10/group): group 1 (Fill Magic Ortodôntico®/ Magic bond®) and group 2 (Transbond XT®/Clearfil Protect Bond®, which has antimicrobial agents). The specimens were subjected to the shear bond strength test at 1mm/min. The maximum strength recorded to dislodge the bracket was converted into MPa considering the bond area. The Residual Adhesive Index (RAI) was evaluated on the debonded brackets. Results: Group 2 had higher bond strength than group 1 (P=0.001). For RAI assessment, both groups showed failure at the enamel/adhesive interface with retention of most adhesive on the bracket base. Conclusion: The two groups are suitable for bonding orthodontic brackets, and the group with the adhesive containing antimicrobial agents showed higher bond strength than the group with conventional adhesive. Key words: Shear strength; adhesives; products with antimicrobial action
