Resumo: Purpose: Stryphnodendron adstringens (“barbatimão”) is a medicinal plant of the Leguminoseae family from the Brazilian “cerrado”. This plant is used in folk medicine because of its healing, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and hemostatic effects. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the “barbatimão” crude hydroalcoholic extract against cariogenic microorganisms. Methods: The broth dilution method was used to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the “barbatimão” hydroalcoholic extract against Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, and Lactobacillus casei. Results: The “barbatimão” hydroalcoholic extract showed antibacterial activity against S. mitis e L. casei, with MIC ranging from 350 to >400 μg/mL. Conclusion: These results suggest that the “barbatimão” hydroalcoholic extract might be used as an adjuvant measure to control dental caries. Key words: Antimicrobial activity; “barbatimão”; Stryphnodendron adstringens; oral microorganisms; dental caries
