Resumo: Disorders of acid-base equilibrium are common in critically ill patients, and are associated with greater morbidity and mortality. Methods to understand these disorders and to identify interventions to avoid them or to treat them are therefore extremelly important. The traditional approach is often inadequate to explain the acid-base disorders and to guide treatment. In the present review, the authors present the Stewart model, which modified the understanding of acid-base disorders in critically ill patients and has brought important clinical contribution. KEY WORDS: ACID-BASE DISORDER; TRADITIONAL MODEL; STEWART MODEL.
