Resumo: Objective: This article highlights the importance of including IC on the list of possible diseases, which have chronic pelvic pain of bladder origin, and suggests its adequate investigation, diagnosis and treatment. Sources of data: Nonsystematic review using Medline database articles. Summary of the findings: In patient with chronic pelvic pain have to suspect of interstitial cystitis when, associate the pain, to exist the complaint of urgency, frequency mictional increase. The investigation to have cistoscopy, potassium testing and urodynamics. Conclusion: The interstitial cystitis is a chronic disorder of urinary tract lower. No have medication curative for this pathology, but one treatment of relief symptoms can to provide improvement in quality of life. Objetivo: Esta revisão destaca a importância da inclusão da cistite intersticial na lista de possíveis doenças que estejam envolvidas na gênese da dor pélvica crônica, além de sua adequada investigação diagnóstica e tratamento. Fonte de dados: Revisão bibliográfica não sistemática sobre o tema abordado, utilizando-se a base de dados do Medline. Síntese dos dados: Na paciente com dor pélvica crônica deve-se suspeitar de cistite intersticial quando, associado à dor, existir a queixa de urgência, freqüência miccional aumentada. A investigação deve ser feita com cistoscopia, teste do potássio e avaliação urodinâmica. Conclusão: A cistite intersticial é um distúrbio crônico do trato urinário inferior. Não há medicação curativa para essa patologia, porém um tratamento de alívio dos sintomas pode proporcionar uma melhora na qualidade de vida.
