Resumo: | Purpose: Chronic hepatitis C is an insidiously progressive disease, in witch repeated assessment of liver histology is required. Various serum markers have now been introduced. Cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) is the fifth member of the trombospondin family of extra cellular calcium-binding proteins. It was initially isolated and characterized in cartilage tissue. One study investigated the expression of COMP in normal liver, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma tissues. Our present aim was to asses the serum COMP in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Methods and results: Serum levels of COMP were measured in 10 patients with chronic hepatitis C (cases) and 100 healthy patients (controls). The difference between two groups was not statistical significant and not related to clinical stage of liver fibrosis, virus genotypes, platelets or transaminases alterations. Conclusion: COMP was absent or rarely expressed in liver cirrhosis tissues. Others serum fibrotic markers have now been studied. KEY WORDS: BIOLOGICAL MARKERS; THROMBOSPONDINS; HEPATITIS C, CHRONIC; LIVER CIRRHOSIS. |

Cartilage oligomeric matrix expression in patients with chronic hepatitis C [Abstract in English]Expressão da proteína oligomérica da matriz da cartilagem (COMP/Trombospondina 5) em pacientes portadores de hepatite C crônicaPurpose: Chronic hepatitis C is an insidiously progressive disease, in witch repeated assessment of liver histology is required.
