Resumo: Some researchers question whether Case Reports should be considered research involving human subjects and therefore need to be presented to a Research Ethics Committee. Opinions of the National Research Ethics argue that Case Reports should be referred to a Research Ethics Committee for proper evaluation. Thus, there will be adequate coverage, from the ethical point of view, for the patient, the investigator and the institution itself. Scientia Medica's principle is requesting ethics approval for Case Reports. Although not yet adopted by all publishers, authors and representatives of the committees, this guideline is gaining increasing place in the scientific publications that recognize its consistency and property in defending the best interests of the patient, the researcher, the institution and the journal.
