Resumo: AIMS: The authors wish to contribute to the analysis of menopause from the perspective of Gerontology, deepening discussions on issues such as relations between longevity and reproduction, offspring, genetics and environment. SOURCE OF DATA: A review of the literature found on MedLine and LILACS, as well as on textbooks on Geriatrics, Gerontology and Gynecology was performed. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS: Understanding the complex phenomenon of female aging is still evolving today. Menopause is part of that process and, as well as life history, reproductive traits and fecundity, it is related to longevity. Menopause should not be viewed as a disease; however, as it is associated with symptoms and physical signs that can compromise women’s quality of life, it deserves a systemic therapeutic approach, involving from changes in lifestyle, such as physical activity and diet, to hormone replacement. CONCLUSIONS: Menopause is part of the aging process of all women, and it brings along important biological, psychological, and social consequences. In the contemporary view, the combination therapy for signs and symptoms related to menopause are increasingly tailored to the profile of lifestyle and health of women.

Editora da PUCRS - ediPUCRS2010-04-23info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfapplication/pdfhttps://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/scientiamedica/article/view/5893Scientia Medica; Vol. 20 No. 2 (2010); 176-184Scientia Medica; v. 20 n. 2 (2010); 176-1841980-61081806-5562reponame:Scientia Medica (Porto Alegre.
