Resumo: The Diocese of Manaus was born Romanized in 1892. Its first bishops faced numerous challenges to consolidate it and to meet the guidelines of the Holy See. Six bishops led it during its 60 years. This article presents its third bishop: Dom João Irineu Joffily, who led the Diocese from 1916 to 1924. From the state of Paraíba, from an influential family, he was prepared to compose the picture of the Brazilian Episcopate. He had his career linked to education before being appointed to the Diocese of Manaus. We followed Sergio Miceli’s footsteps in the configuration of the ecclesiastical elite during the First Brazilian Republic to trace it. In the eight years of his administration, he sought to rebalance finances and consolidate the romanization project in the Bishopric, facing the economic crisis of rubber in the Amazon region in a context of war and political tensions. He stood out for his zeal for education, for the creation of new prelaces in the Amazon.
