Buddhism as a Mediating System for Missions in Asian Contexts of the 16th -17th Century: Necessities, Possibilities and Hermeneutic Limits

Resumo: The movement of Asian missions in the first Modern Age was characterized by a hermeneutic attitude which can be understood as the “consciousness of the problem of context”, that is, a conscientious reflection upon the mission itself. This consciousness turned out to be the basis for the reformulation of the Christian message through which the latter emancipated itself from the historical context of the Western civilization. The present article refers to this period suggesting an innovative comparative analysis of the challenges Christian missionaries in Japan, China and India had to face in order to overcome the hermeneutic limits imposed by Buddhism.
