Resumo: The new catholic religious communities in Brazil has challenged traditional religious congregations because they are able to produce innovative ways of adherence to Religious Life. These forms combine traditionalism and have greater flexibility and attractiveness of female youth segment. It is analyzed in this paper the Toca de Assis, a new community that succeeded the status of a religious institute, but is able, perhaps by being still young, to establish less asymmetrical gender relations. The research, conducted in the period 2009-2011 compared some religious congregations of Franciscan origin with Toca de Assis. This community, although contemporary, combining aspects of the Middle Ages to modernity, particularly in relation to the use of new media and communication technologies.

Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo2014-12-31info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://revistas.pucsp.br/index.php/rever/article/view/21747REVER: Journal for the Study of Religion; Vol. 14 No. 2 (2014): Freiras – Uma História Silenciada; 136-161REVER: Revista de Estudos da Religião; v. 14 n. 2 (2014): Freiras – Uma História Silenciada; 136-1611677-1222reponame:Rever (São Paulo.
