Making the space sacred: spacial and identity constructions of “Terreiros Traçados” in Campina Grande-PB

Resumo: We propose to list some relevant aspects in the composition of “terreiros traçados” (crossed terreiros) in Campina Grande-PB, in order to comprehend which made possible the construction of spaces with double religious belonging: to the jurema sagrada (sacred jurema) and to the candomblé simultaneously. Theoretical discussions as well as participant observational experiences and interviews with the city’s oldest leaders allowed to detail the criticism and to point out the limits of recurrent categories in the studies upon the African-Brazilian and Amerindian religions, namely, syncretism and hybridism. We comprehend that to analyze the identity formation of these religious spaces it is necessary to observe the social dynamics and cross-cultural intersections that underlie it.

As discussões teóricas, bem como as experiências de observação participante e entrevistas concedidas pelas lideranças mais antigas da cidade permitiram pormenorizar a crítica e apontar os limites de categorias recorrentes nos estudos de religiões afro-brasileiras e ameríndias, a saber, sincretismo e hibridismo.
