The use of ayahuasca in the treatment of chemical dependence: a Brazilian integration review

This is an integrative review article about Brazilian scientific production about the use of Ayahuasca in the treatment of chemical dependence. We identified 11 studies, localized in the databases PePsic, SciElo, Lilacs, and Google Scholar, through systematic searches with the Keywords “Ayahuasca,” “Chemical Dependence,” and “Santo Daime.” Studies show that during treatment ceremonies and, under Ayahuasca’s effects, participants face critical and profound reflections on their life history and existential issues, which mobilize the transformation of thinking, feeling, and acting. About different topics, including chemical dependency. Besides, besides the effects of drinking, studies point to the importance of the religious group in the process of curing drug addicts, reaffirming the importance of religiosity in this context.
