Resumo: Osgood Schlatter syndrome (OSS) is characterized by the suddenly anterior knee pain due to excessive muscle tension of the patellar tendon caused by repetitive strain during a transition from childhood to adolescence. The age group between 12 to 15 years is the most affected, in both sexes. The prevalence of OSS in adolescents that practice physical activities is approximately of 10%. The OSS causes pain and discomfort in the affected knee for activities such as: running, crouching, jumping, kicking, down stairs among others. Adolescents affected by this syndrome end up moving away from their physical activities and need physical therapy intervention. However, due to the scarcity of studies, the physical therapy intervention for OSS makes use of different treatments. The aim of the study was to carry out a systematic review of the literature on the main signs and symptoms involved in the development of OSS, in order to assist in the early diagnosis and establishment of therapeutic therapy aimed at the mechanisms of injury performed in OSS. Only full quantitative and qualitative observational studies were included (cohort, cross-sectional and prospective), published in the period 2010 to 2020, whose population analyzed were healthy children and/or adolescents, aged with OSS, aged between 8 and 15 years, of both sexes. Studies involving mandatory neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, traumatic or rheumatologic pathologies and previous knee surgeries were excluded; studies whose objectives involved the validation of instruments; studies published as abstracts or at scientific events; basic research, course completion papers, and case reports were also excluded. The electronic databases used were MedLine, Capes and the Virtual Health Library. The search took place from March 7th to June 30th, 2021. The following keywords were used: “Osgood Schlatter”, “bone maturity”, “hamstrings”, “muscle strength”, “muscle shortening”, “ankle mobility” and “risk”. The protocol for this systematic review was registered in the International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews under number CRD42021266303. A total of 448 articles were found and seven of them were included in the systematic review, with a total sample of 1,715 participants aged between 8 and 15 years. The studies found a risk of bias ranging from 12.5% to 62.5 %, which represents a high and low risk of bias, respectively, according to the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewers Manual. It is concluded that the main clinical signs and symptoms of OSS are rectus femoris shortening, knee pain, pain on palpation of the tibial tuberosity, pain on knee extension resistance, pain when jumping, during or after sports practice, widening of tibial apophysis prominence and tibial tuberosity edema.
