Resumo: The process of hospitalization in an intensive care unit can generate stress, awakening feelings related to anguish, fear and suffering. It is in this scenario that patients experience physical and psychological discomfort, arising from the disease and events resulting from the need for hospitalization. And consequently, at this moment, most families want proximity and information about the health status of their hospitalized family member. Family visits are recommended as a factor in reducing anxiety and helping in the health recovery process. Objective: To understand the impact of family visits to critical patients admitted to an adult ICU and investigate their ability to cope based on this family stimulus. Methodology: This is a descriptive and exploratory study, with a qualitative approach. Patients over 18 years of age of both sexes who received a family visit during hospitalization in the Adult Intensive Care Unit of Santa Lucinda Hospital were interviewed and will be invited to answer the following question: “Tell me how you feel when you receive the visit from a family member?” Results: The reports revealed that the experience of receiving family members in the hospital environment may vary between individuals. According to the significance of the statements, three categories were created that demonstrate the impact of family visits for patients. The most significant category was “The family visit had a positive impact on the ability to cope” and reveals that the family visit had a positive impact on the patients' ability to cope, generating feelings of comfort and positively surprising the interviewees. The second category, “The duration and number of visitors in the ICU are insufficient”, points out that patients felt the need for longer visits, flexible hours and permission for more visitors, emphasizing that the lack of family support through visits is seen negatively in the current system. The third category, "The family visit had a negative impact on the ability to cope," showed that the process of illness and hospitalization can lead the patient to feel impacted by circumstances that they cannot control, especially due to the fragility of their condition and of their emotional relationships. Conclusion: It was identified that family visits have a positive impact on patients' ability to cope, allowing a connection with reality, avoiding a rupture in the social network and helping in the recovery process, evidenced by the statements of participants who reported feelings of joy, happiness, gratitude, comfort, motivation and confidence after the family visit. The study has limitations due to the sample size. However, it highlights the importance of considering the patient's perspective in ICU visiting policy and suggests the need for more research on the topic

The study has limitations due to the sample size. However, it highlights the importance of considering the patient's perspective in ICU visiting policy and suggests the need for more research on the topicIntrodução: O processo de internação em uma unidade de tratamento intensivo pode gerar estresse, despertando sentimentos relacionados a angústia, medo e sofrimento.
