This dissertation aims at analyzing one of the voices which are part of Riobaldo s discourse. Riobaldo is the narrator-character of the novel Grande sertão: veredas, by Guimarães Rosa. The analysis will focus upon the voice of the mother figure once we consider there is a determinant presence of this voice which, representing the woman who is poor, mixed-race and utterly deprived of power and social prestige, will be honored by the novel s narrator by embodying it in his discourse. Thus, the objective of this study is to investigate and demonstrate that this voice is preponderant to the instauration of the subject materialized in this discourse and determinant to the conduction of the plot, to Riobaldo s crossing endeavor. The preponderance of this voice is determined due to its being a meaningful social voice throughout the narrator s formation - he lived only with his mother until his teenage years and it will exert influence on him until the plot end. From the enunciative and discursive marks which anchor the mother s presence in Riobaldo s discourse, this analysis will be carried out taking into account the textual context in which the voice is present, the Brazilian social-historical context evident in Rosa s novel, and the participation of the mother figure in the process of subject constitution/formation, proving that, in his discourse, he announces and denounces his mother s influence in the way he sees the world and conducts his epopee. In order to carry out the analysis, it was necessary to single out the excerpts in which the narrator mentions his mother in a contextualized and sequential way, in the plot linearity, and in the time/space (chronotope) correspondent to the related action. These references will be considered enunciative-discursive marks as they will be shown in the development of the analysis, revealing the position taken by the mother in the narrator/character s voice as well as in the totality of Grande sertão: veredas. Our hypothesis is that the mother s presence guided Riobaldo in the semi-arid interior (being), demonstrating that in the tangle of conflicts there is a mother figure who constitutes, accompanies and guides him, determining how the plot and the final crossing are conducted. The analysis will be based upon the dialogic discourse perspective as it is presented by Bakhtin and the Circle. We hold that Riobaldo s discourse is dialogic, filled with innumerous voices, just like any other discourse, and that his mother s voice is not only one of them, but the one that constitutes him. We also take into account that the narrator-character in Grande sertão: Veredas not only conveys a discourse but is also constituted by it, which makes possible the analysis of the character s discourse through the investigation of the voices which constitute it. In this perspective, we present the forms of the presence of the other in the discourse, situating the mother s voice as an authoritarian word in Riobaldo s discourse. Thus, the Bakhtinian concepts of discourse, authoritarian word, dialogism, polyphony, discursive act, chronotope as well as the concept of subject proposed by this theory provide the foundation for the analysis of Riobaldo s discourse, situating the mother figure and demonstrating, thus, that in the crossing his mother is preponderantly incorporated into Riobaldo s discursive body
