Resumo: The export of Japanese cultural products, especially films, in order to change the perception of the country embodies cultural diplomacy. This kind of diplomacy as a means to achieve its goal of conveying a positive image towards the international community contributes to the effect of amnesia regarding Japan's imperialist past. The case of Japanese soft power unveils the challenges in projecting it, considering that war memories are contested domestically. Since memory is linked to national identity, Japan finds itself trapped in ambiguity. Even so, the images projected by the films create an imaginary capable of inducing admiration and shaping the perceptions of a nation
