Resumo: This dissertation aims to analyze the romance Leite derramado (2009) by Chico Buarque, which has as main goal the narrator, oscillating from oral tradition, from whom tells his life s experiences and advice, and the contemporary narrator, who no longer knows how to recount, because he feels lost himself in his own existence, creating a discourse full of gaps and omissions. The problem of this research was born out from the questioning about the coexistence of these two divergent aspects of the narrative act that come together to construct this novel. The hypothesis guiding the investigative pathway is that the reconciliation between tradition and modernity of the narrative creates a hybrid between memory and forgetting, erasing the tracks and the attempt to rescue the past, taking death as a point of union of these opposites: dying narrator, narrative, reader and author in the process of fragmentation and undoing. The theoretical framework that guides this work is based primarily on traditional theories about the narrator of Walter Benjamin, the postmodern narrator Silviano Santiago, Blanchot´s studies and Lélia Parreira Duarte on the theme of death in literature, besides the reflections by Ecléa Bosi about the relationship between memory and aging. The dissertation tries to explore throughout this four chapters how tradition and modernity are presented in the novel and how death experience happens and spreads to the entire space of the narrative: a dying narrator, an inconsistent and incomplete text which is enunciated by the voice of Eulálio, narrator and character in the story, and is collected by an author whose writing is undefined; a reader who listens and read an almost-read story that does not know to whom it belongs. Anyway, everything is about to disappear in that balance between visibility and invisibility, as suggests the "leite derramado" - the title. Then, in conclusion when the work of Chico Buarque reconciles tradition and modernity creates an unfinished novel, in tune with the argument from T.S. Eliot that you can not create something new without using the tradition, even if it returns shattered and fragmentary

Then, in conclusion when the work of Chico Buarque reconciles tradition and modernity creates an unfinished novel, in tune with the argument from T.S.
