Resumo: The present essay has the objective of articulating by the use of bibliographical research the notion of narcissism according to Sigmund Freud as well as the repercussions amongst contemporary authors. In order to achieve the objective, this research was based on “Introduction of Narcissism” (1914/ 2010) due to the fact that it is considered a Freudian foundation in the matter. Other essays were also widely used, such as “Three essays of the theory of sexuality” (1905/ 1996), “Leonardo da Vinci: a Memory of his childhood” (1911/ 2013), “Psychoanalytical observations about a paranoia case” [the Schreber case] (1911/2010), “Libido theory and narcissism” (1917b[18]/1996) and “Civilization and its Discontents”. The matter of a narcissistic culture was also studied through Christopher Lasch‟s concepts on the essay “The culture of narcissism” (1983). The present research also articulated five other essays that present the concept of narcissism in a historiographic way beginning with the notion of Ego as well as an understanding about narcissism on a social scale: “Narcissisms”(2007) by Oscar Miguelez “The culture of narcissism” (2006) and “The construction of the Ego and the Modernity” by Pedro Luiz Ribeiro de Santi, “The discontentment in present days” by Joel Birman and “Melancholy: traces of pain and loses” by Luciana Chauí Berlinck (2008). The importance of the present essay is due to the fact that it discusses an extremely current theme that influences the constitution of the contemporary individual‟s subjectivity. In order to do so, it considers Freud‟s theory in which the notion of narcissism is connected to an individual‟s libidinal investment on himself as all as to other objects. Regarding contemporary authors Freud‟s theory is used in order to the application of the notion of narcissism in today‟s society. From a broad point of view some of the contemporary authors consider that social and cultural transformations happened in the sixties and discuss political and education chances that occurred in this decade. Others consider cultural, consumption and psychoanalytical influence on the increased individualism, discussed by Lasch as the moment in which narcissism is revered and hopelessness about the future seems to be prevailing. In conclusion, the present essay finds that narcissism may be a way out from and existential crisis inherent on contemporary individuals

In conclusion, the present essay finds that narcissism may be a way out from and existential crisis inherent on contemporary individualsEste trabalho tem por objetivo articular, através de pesquisa bibliográfica, o conceito de narcisismo em Sigmund Freud e sua repercussão em autores contemporâneos.
