Resumo: This article aims to address the abolitionist movement in Brazil during the 1870s and 1880s. The struggle of black engineer André Rebouças is highlighted as fundamental to the movement. The article demonstrates the importance of the international context for the construction of a Brazilian abolitionist rhetoric. It is possible to identify the different styles of activism of the abolitionist leaders who, to some extent, belonged to a literate elite of the empire. The article emphasizes that the government of Rio Branco partially represented the abolitionist demands, fundamentally, in the approval of the Free Womb law in 1871. Finally, the performance of black André Rebouças and José do Patrocínio is addressed. Each one, in their own style of activism, was fundamental to the Brazilian abolitionist movement
