This is an analysis of the problematic use of private military companies – with a particular focus on the well-known case of the Wagner group – in the invasion war of Ukraine, from its beginning in 2022, until the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin in August 2023. This problematic is examined through the lens of International Security, based, primarily, on the scenario of this war – and on its main actors, such as the Kremlin and Prigozhin, for exemple – and constructed from various bibliographic sources – such as news, articles and theoretical texts, for exemple – that addresses the subject and contribute to the debate, relying, therefore, for this purpose, on news about relevant events that occurred during the mentioned period, as well as explaining the main arguments of some authors – such as Peter Singer, Christopher Kinsey, and Sean McFate – who are experts in such area of studies, and using their articles and academic texts related to the topic, to thus discuss about the theoretical perspectives involving these private military companies and, more specifically, the Wagner group. Accordingly, this text tries to present an informative overview primarily of the political, humanitarian, military, economic, legal and theoretical issues mainly related to the use of these companies – especially the Wagner group – in the armed conflict in Ukraine. Therefore, connecting theory with practice, while considering the relevance of this discussion, owing to the increasing number of similar episodes occurring in various parts of the world in recent years
