Resumo: The present study aimed at understanding the concept of action at a distance based on the work Traité de Mécanique Céleste, written by Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827), published between the years 1796 and 1825, in France. The analysis of this five-volume work enabled us to observe how the author formulated his studies on physical phenomena in relation to his cosmology. The interpretation of action at a distance focused on the study of the capillarity of celestial motion and on the study of universal gravitation. Such interpretation of action at a distance was based on the work that has drawn on the differential and integral calculus equation, on the empirical observations carried out by astronomy during the 17th and the 18th centuries, in order to approach and develop his understandings of natural phenomena. In our readings regarding Laplace's historiography, we have selected some books and academic papers that traced his life, academic background, political roles and publications. His theory of universal gravitation interacts with the Newtonian gravitation, particularly in this study. This perspective enabled us to detect the discussions of continuity in the history of science, such as the phenomena associated with molecular interactions, that would be controled by attractive and repulsive forces, not sensible to imperceptible distances; and the phenomena related to celestial motion interactions, that would be governed by the law of universal gravitation

A análise dos cincos tomos que compõem essa obra permitiu observar como o autor teceu sua rede de estudos dos fenômenos físicos relativos à sua cosmologia. A interpretação de ação à distância orbitou entre o estudo da capilaridade do movimento dos corpos celestes e da gravitação universal. Essa interpretação de ação à distância teve como base a escrita que se utilizou da linguagem do cálculo diferencial integral, das observações experimentais realizadas pela astronomia nos séculos XVII e XVIII, para abordar e moldar suas percepções dos fenômenos naturais. Nas leituras realizadas a respeito da historiografia de Laplace, foram selecionados alguns livros e estudos acadêmicos que mapearam a vida, a formação universitária, as funções políticas e as publicações. Sua teoria da gravitação universal dialoga, em particular neste estudo, com a gravitação newtoniana. Tal perspectiva possibilitou notar as argumentações de continuidade em história da ciência, como os fenômenos associados às interações moleculares, que seriam geridos por forças atrativas e repulsivas, insensíveis a distâncias imperceptíveis, e os fenômenos relacionados às interações dos movimentos celestes seriam regidos pela lei da gravitação universalCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESapplication/pdfhttp://tede2.pucsp.br/tede/retrieve/48003/Lu%c3%ads%20D%c3%a1rio%20Sepulveda.pdf.jpgporPontifícia Universidade Católica de São PauloPrograma de Estudos Pós-Graduados em História da CiênciaPUC-SPBrasilFaculdade de Ciências Exatas e TecnologiaHistória da CiênciaLaplace, Pierre SimonMecanica celesteAção à distânciaHistory of ScienceMechanics, CelestialAction at a distanceCNPQ::CIENCIAS HUMANAS::HISTORIA::HISTORIA DAS CIENCIASO conceito de ação à distância na obra Mecânica celeste de Pierre Simon Laplaceinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da PUC_SPinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)instacron:PUC_SPTEXTLuís Dário Sepulveda.pdf.txtLuís Dário Sepulveda.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain291733https://repositorio.pucsp.br/xmlui/bitstream/handle/21829/4/Lu%c3%ads%20D%c3%a1rio%20Sepulveda.pdf.txt1d8ae404ed12358a0488a25c2bcde7f8MD54LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
